Canada History

The two companies behind Arla Foods, the Danish MD Foods and the Swedish Arla, are both rooted in the co-operative movement.

Arla Foods in Canada


Arla Foods Inc is a wholly owned subsidiary of Arla Foods amba in Denmark, a Danish and Swedish-owned dairy co-operative and one of the largest Dairy companies in the world. Arla Foods has been established in Canada since 1961.
 

Arla Foods Inc. is a major supplier of specialty cheese, sourced from our parent production facilities in Europe, own and licensed Canadian production. In addition to this Arla Foods imports from Italy, and many other European as well as North and South American countries.

ARLA FOODS Milestones:

1961: Subsidiary established under the name of DOFO.

1987: First Danish Havarti Recipe production in Canada.

1988: DOFO joins MD Foods, and subsidiary changes name to MD Foods Inc.

1992: First Danish Feta Recipe production in Canada.

2000: Merger between Arla in Sweden and MD Foods in Denmark.

2004: Arla Foods Inc. acquires National Cheese Company Ltd. The company name in Canada is Arla Foods Inc.

2006:
First production of Danish style Blue Cheese outside Denmark.
